You can use storage chests for additional storage as well as extra seating in the family room. If the chest has material on it, however there should be a no eating and no feet on the chest rule. Storage chests that are made of bare wood should be treated with care or they will end up scratched and gouged. While in certain decorating schemes a little wear is possibly a good thing, you do not want to encourage it, especially in a house with little children who do not understand the difference between a little wear and defacing furniture and walls.
