There is a lot of confusion about what occasional tables are. In the early days, these were tables that were pulled out whenever the existing furniture system could not accommodate extra guests. However, nowadays they are show pieces. An occasional table is smaller than a sofa table. In broader terms, an end table and an accent table can be called occasional tables but a dining table cannot be called the same. So if a sales person tries to sell you an occasional table, you know how to define it and what it can be used for. Off course, if you have extra guests some day, you can always use your occasional table to serve tea.
